Battle Brothers' Vengeance! - Arathis Secundus

270613.M41
Blood Angels vs Grey Knights.

Following an astropathic communication sent from the Dark Angels on Fangol to all loyal space marine chapters in the Midas Crusade, the Blood Angels in the Perseus Sector travelled to the Arathis system to seek vengeance on the Grey Knights.

The Blood Angels deployed quickly from orbit and launched a sudden unexpected attack into the survivours of the recent battle against the Eldar. Immediately the Grey Knights were put on the rear foot, enacting a fighting retreat to their landing craft.

Librarian Quinnis, master of this attack tracked down the commander of the force (following Coreteaz' departure) and had him pass a message on to Lord Inquisitor Butlerian:

"We are allies in this grand crusade to bring the Emperor's light to these distant stars, to bring sword and flame to the alien and the heretic. But we are not the puppets or the tools of the Inquisition. If you do not turn your eyes to the great enemy, the Adeptus Astartes will have no choice but to pluck them out. This is your only warning."

Retribution - Fangol

270613.M41
Grey Knights vs Dark Angels.

Inquisitor Butlerian's personal grudge against the Dark Angels has surfaced once again. Following a combined action to purge several Word Bearer outposts on the moons of Fangol, Butlerian decided that the Dark Angels had seen things that no man should have witnessed and ordered his men to turn on the loyal space marines while he returned to his flag ship.

With no other course of action but to fight their former allies, the Dark Angels rallied together under the banner of Grand Master Belial. The space marine commander led his men into the heart of the coflict to find and duel the commander of the Grey Knights. Their duel was savage and well fought but after many hours the Grey Knight fell. Belial demanded that Butlerian answer for his crimes against the chapter, but instead the Grey Knight force teleported out and their ship translated out of the system.

It may be some time before the two sides ally again.

The Relic of Khaine - Arathis Secundus

270613.M41
Craftworld Iyanden vs Grey Knights.

Acolytes of Inquisitor Corteaz have uncovered the reason for the Eldar's raids on the frozen world of Arathis Secundus. The xenos believe that they have uncovered a fragment of their god Khaine buried beneath the ice.

Corteaz deployed a full company of Grey Knights to assault the Eldar excavations and recover the relic from their hands. The conflict was brief with Farseer T'ate having forseen their arrival in the strands of fate. The Eldar used fast attack craft and wraith constructs to keep the Grey Knights at bay while they uncovered the fragment of their god and carried it into the webway.

In the aftermath, Inquisitors Corteaz and Butlerian agreed that the machinations playing out in the Midas sector would require the Grey Knights to combat the xenos threats as well the forces of Chaos. To ignore one over the other would spell certain doom for the Crusade.

Sector Control XXIV

"And we won. Not because we outfought them, not because we were luckier than them or stronger than them or smarter than them. We won because the damn Eldar let us win."
- Unknown guardsmen prior to execution for heresy.

In the Midas sector the forces of Chaos continue to dominate despite the best efforts of the Imperium to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Xenos forces still wage a constant battles for the more remote worlds.

The Perseus sector seems to have become the new target for the Craftworlds arrayed against the crusade. Eldar battle the Imperium. Hive Fleet Archelon still runs rampage and the ancient Necron tombs in this sector of space awaken.

In the neighbouring Medusa sector, the Tau have claimed several worlds as part of their wave of expansion, and may pose an additional threat to the forces at war in this corner of the Imperium.

Wrath of Angels - Arathis Prime

250613.M41
Dark Angels vs Craftworld Ulthwe.

The next Eldar offensive was the lead them into the heart of Imperial territory. Over four days the Ctaftworld's infantry overran and captured four major objectives. However, after four days of feigned retreat to lure the Craftworld armies into Imperial territory, the 1st and 4th companies of Dark Angels combined with thre Imperial airforce launched a counter-attack. The space marines were assigned to meet and engage the Eldar assault in the centre until they could be enveloped by the encircling Imperial ground forces. The Imperial support included two Warhound class titans whose megabolters inflicted heavy casualties on the Ulthwe infantry.

The Imperial Guard didn't stop there and marched on the Eldar positions. The Eldar managed to halt that offensive but had taken so many casualties doing so that their hold on that territory became a minor roadbump in the Imperium's retake of Arathis Prime. Fighting continued for a few more days, at which time both sides had constructed either trenchworks or fortifications, and statemate ensued.

Death on the Ice - Arathis Secundus

"The Tau Empire is dedicated to peace!"

230613.M41
Necrons vs Tau.

A week after the Tau fleet returned to Arathis Secundus the Necron Lords decided to deal a decisive strike against them in attempt to ward them off this world entirely.

The Necron lords were convinced that the Tau had to attack the two largest tomb complexes currently free of the ice. To block their advance a sizeable force was dispatched to meet them on the polar ice fields. The Necrons spread their forces out in an attempt to mitigate the Tau mobility and heavy weapons.

The battle began when a scouting party was intercepted two miles north of the tomb complexes by Necron deathmarks. Quickly phalanxes of warriors were dispatched to that location. The rest of the remaining Necron forces hunkered down in the shattered ice fields but were driven out by heavy railgun fire. By this time however, scarabs had undermined the ice fields and huge crevasses opened up underneath the Tau firewarriors and thousands were sent to their deaths in the icy waters below.

The Necron line held under heavy fire and were able to stop several attempts to breach those lines with gravitic transports. Towards the end of the day, the Tau were forced back to their starships.

Processing Station Omega 3 - Minora IV

200613.M41
Word Bearers / Chaos Daemons vs Grey Knights.

The battle of Processing Station Omega 3 comprised the opening attack to retake Minora IV from the Imperium. Forming a fundamental component of Kor Aven's new war strategy, the plan was to retake and secure Minora IV as a jumping point to drive the false Emperor's followers out of the Midas Sector once and for all.

In addition to a legion of Word Bearer marines, the warlord was also assigned a land raider detachment, and the ability to summon forth a horde of daemons from the Warp. Ranged against them was a company of legendary Grey Knights left to garrison in case of just such an attack.

Having managed to smash through the orbiting starships, the Word Bearers deployed and quickly seized the processing station at complex Omega 3. However, the warlord was suspicious of Imperial defences, and wary of advancing much further in fear of stepping into a carefully laid trap. His orders were clear however and the Word Bearers marched on two more stations which fell almost without opposition. The following day the Imperium launched a counter-attack. Without reinforcements of their own, the Word Bearers began a withdrawl back to Omega 3.

The Grey Knights hastily dispatched were too short on manpower to drive the enemy from the processing station. Imperial troops took up control of the facilities encircling Omega 3 in preperation of annihilating the Word Bearers. But for now, the forces of Chaos were back on Minora IV.

Battle on the Ashen Frontier - Khemet III

200513.M41
Craftworld Iyanden vs Necrons.

The Necron objective was to recapture territory lost to the Eldar months earlier, pinning their forces in place and allowing the bulk of their forces to attack the Eldar firebases in the east. In opposition, the farseers of Iyanden anticipated the assault and determined to remain on the defensive, holding the line with the minimal possible force needed to keep the bulk of the Necron army engaged there. The main Iyanden force would be on the right flank, sweeping through lightly held territory, descending on the Necron headquarters and executing a massive envelopment manoeuvre which would entrap the machines and lead to their rapid annihilation.

The Eldar invaded Necron territory and immediately began to besiege one of the outlaying Necron tomb cities. Despite evidence of the Eldar forces massing in the days prior, the Necron commander dismissed the threat to his northern flank. In fact, he welcomed the prospect which would mean that the Eldar forces coming directly for his position should be much weaker and with fewer troops.

The first Eldar attack began in the south where a guardian force supported by wraithguard and fighter aircraft advanced into Necron territory capturing several outposts without much conflict. However, a counterattack commenced the next day which forced Iyanden into a slow withdrawal. Necron reinforcements were dispatched but they arrived too late to prevent the destruction of the captured tomb complex.

The main Necron offensive in the south advanced towards the nearest Eldar firebases. The Necron moves were welcomed by the farseers of Iyanden. Farseer T'ate was in charge of the Iyanden forces there, and he assigned his troops to meet and engage the Necron assault in the centre until reinforcements from the north could assault the Necron flanks. The Iyanden wraithguard units, equipped with powerful D-cannons, inflicted heavy casualties on the Necron warriors.

For the Necron lords, their hope of a swift, decisive victory had evaporated and they now sought to avoid defeat against an Eldar force more aggressive that had been expected. By the end of the battle over 75,000 Necron warriors had been destroyed to less than half that in Eldar casualties.

Ulthwe Attacks! - Arathis Prime

180613.M41
Craftworld Ulthwe vs Imperial Guard.

The sudden appearance of eldar wraithships in orbit above Arathis Prime set the local government into a terrified panic. As alien war machines deployed to the surface the planetary defence forces kicked into gear.

The Eldar battle plan called for a sweep of manpower around the concentration of PDF fortifications. The Imperium's fixed defences were designed to resist any potential enemy: alien or heretic. When the Imperial commander received word that the enemy were advancing he began to implement the standard contingency plans: to concentrate his troops in the plains before the hive cities while allowing the fortifications behind them to slow down, if not stop, the alien advance.

Hive Imperialis was surrounded by hundreds of heavily armed and armoured forts. They existed mainly underground, exposing only mounds of plasticrete, masonry and soil. Each fort possessed a series of retractable cupolas that held weapons ranging from plasma cannons up to defence lasers. The garrisons manning them were not at full strength and many in the PDF had received only minimal training.

The PDF had little opportunity to complete preparations as the Eldar advance came upon them all too soon. Detachments of wave serpents and other gravitic engines were dispatched to hold the roads out of the hive city and to pulverise any initial resistance. Upon reaching their targets they came under fire from the more long range weapons along the Imperial lines. The brave Cadian 133rd had attempted to halt the advance but by nightfall were forced to retreat to the defence lines.

In the early hours, an attack against bastion 43 was driven back by concentrated heavy bolter and artillery fire. Following this defeat the Eldar began an aerial attack with crimson hunters bombing the defence line and the hive city. Meanwhile vypers and other attack craft swept around to the south while the PDF were distracted.

Basilisks and other artillery vehicles were dispatched to higher ground allowing the defenders to provide better fire support against the attacking ground forces. The outer ring of forts continued to hold out, blocking the Eldar advance. The forts endured steady and continuous attacks but most were able to hold out. Only two were destroyed following dedicated attacks from fire prisms. bastion 43 was eventually taken by infantry assault and fire dragons.

To reduce the fortifications, the Craftworld was forced to deploy massive phantom titans. Despite the Imperial Guards best efforts, the forts could not resist firepower of that magnitude. One by one the defencive fortifications were pounded into submission.

By the morning of the third day it was clear that the Imperial forces were in retreat to the hive cities. Unfortunately the Eldar had suffered greatly attempting to break the defences. It is unclear what the Eldar seek to gain by this attack, though it is likely they are working alongside the Iyanden Craftworld, or what such a dedicated attack could mean in the wake of the Midas Crusade.

Prologue: Star Killer

The great doors to the control chamber swung open. Combat servitors and skitari turned to see who entered, raising their weapons instinctively. A burst of painful static filled the air and they stood down instantly. Warmaster Xerxes and his golden power armoured bodyguards entered and stopped to marvel at the interior. Skitari and servitors lined the walls and red robed tech adepts cleansed the machinery with sacred oils. The heady sent of incense hung heavy in the air.

"Who is in charge here?" Xerxes challenged.
"That would be me, Warmaster," said an inhuman machine voice. The voice came from a heavily augmented tech priest now drifting towards the entourage on lightly humming gravitics.
"Forge Master," Xerxes nodded. "Why have you called me across the sector to come here? I have a crusade to win."
"You will want to see what we have discovered in the purged cogitator engines."
Not waiting for a response, the forge master turned and drifted into the heart of the chamber. Xerxes told his bodyguards to remain at the entrance, and he followed the mechanicus priest.

The forge master stopped before a hexagonal display column and activated the controls with mechandrites that emerged from his fingertips.
"Our dark brethren attempted to purge the memory core before they fled. The scrap code was difficult to defeat but we have managed to recover some of what they were attempting here on Minora IV."
A green glow flared into life above the column. The hololith took the form of a spherical object with a dozen or more cylindrical protrusions at regular positions across it's surface.
"What is it?" Xerxes asked.
"Records recovered indicate that this prototype is named a Star Killer."
"What does that mean?"
"If deployed into the heart of a star it could magnify the nuclear reaction a thousand fold. The resulting explosion would destroy the star and all planets within it's system."
"By the Emperor! How many of these things are there?"
"At present, we believe none. This was merely the design board, but our dark brethren had time to download these files before they escaped."
"So they could build these..."
"The sector is in total war and the resources are limited. It would take them some time to build even just one of these devices."

"Warmaster. It is vital to the success of the crusade that your operatives find and destroy any facility or ship where the Dark Mechanicus could be constructing these devices."

The Liberation of Minora IV - Minora IV

130613.M41
Grey Knights vs Word Bearers / Chaos Daemons.

The final step of the liberation of the ancient forge world has begun. Over the last few days ships from the Dark Mechanicus have been sighted fleeing the system. The final objective is the command hive and Butlerian has dispatched a company of Grey Knights to do the job.

Warlord Kor Aven led the defence personaly against the Imperial forces, surrounded by a host of summoned daemons. The daemons did not survive for long as the Grey Knights cast them back into the warp from whence they came. Kor Aven himself was grievously wounded and dragged away from the battlefield by his minions.

With the removal of their warlord, the Chaos forces began to lose discipline. As they fell back the Grey Knights cut them down.

The forge world was now back in the hands of the Mechanicum but it would be some time before it could be reused, as the Inquisition must purge the taint from the planet.

Revenge of the Craftworld - Urbis III

130613.M41
Grey Knights / Craftworld Alaitoc vs Blood Angels

Following their defeat on Rakdos at the hands of the Grey Knights, the farseers of Alaitoc have pulled at the strings of fate to punish the Imperium for their attack. Manipulated by the farseers, the Grey Knights have struck at the forces attacking Urbis III. Despite their psychic protections they did not see through the illusions that made the defending force of Blood Angels appear to be eldar raiders. As the holy warriors battled they were unaware of the Eldar operating in their midst to force them against their allies.

It was only when the Blood Angels Librarians were able to pearce the veil that the Grey Knights realised their deception. The Eldar were not able to hold off two Imperial forces hell bent on their destruction and they fled back into the webway. The Grey Knights teleported back aboard their warship to await further orders.

With the last of the Eldar fled, the Urbis system was back under Imperial control.

Kill The Alien! Purge The Heretic! - Rakdos

110613.M41
Imperial Guard / Craftworld Alaitoc vs Grey Knights.

The Imperial Guard on Rakdos have successfully defeated defeated swarm after swarm of Tyranid bio-organisms. But they have done so with the assistance of Eldar mercenaries from the Alaitoc Craftworld. Despite the victories this association of alien filth cannot be tolerated. Agents of the Inquisition have petitioned that those who allied themselves with the Eldar must be executed as a warning that some victories come at too high a price.

The only inquisitorial force within range was an Ordo Malleus cruiser on route to the Midas Sector carrying a company of Grey Knights. The ship was diverted to the Rakdos system and the holy brothers ordered to eradicate any who had known the touch of heresy.

The Imperial Guard regiments, obviously not willing to just roll over and be executed, fought back with the aid of their Eldar "allies". The battles were brief and entirely one-sided. Great mounds of burning guardsmen were left as a warning to others not to break the tenants of Imperial law.

How the loss of such manpower is going to affect the effort to defeat the Tyranids has yet to be revealed.

March Of The Machines - Arathis Secundus

060613.M41
Imperial Guard / Necrons vs Blood Angels.

The situation on Arathis Secundus has gone from bad to worse. Outpost after outpost is falling to the Necron advance. The guardsmen are not simply being killed though. Their wounded are being infested with mindshackle scarabs and sent out to fight their own forces.

Once this was determined as the cause of the treachery, it was a simple matter for the Imperial psykers to locate the source of the scarabs. The Blood Angels were deployed to stop this perversion of good honest Imperial soldiers.

At the heart of the Necron army the space marines located the Necron Lord responsible for the recent troubles. Surrounding him was a force of controlled guardsmen. The Blood Angels showed no mercy and fought their way through the guardsmen to reach the machine master. The Necron Lord was defeated in a savage display of martial skill by the commander of the space marine detachment. The Necrons had been defeated but for how long?

The Battle for Urbis Minora - Urbis III

050613.M41
Sons of Tantalus / Demiurg Mining Consortium  vs Craftworld Iyanden.

With the agreement of the Urbis planetary governor, the Demiurg have constructed a mining colony on the moon of Urbis Minora. Mining mineral ore, fossil fuels and turning it into promethium, half of which they trade to the Imperium for the war effort.

Two days ago the Demiurg sent out a distress call. Though distorted it clearly informed Urbis III that the Eldar had begun raiding the mining settlement. A request for aid was answered by the Sons of Tantalus who dropped a strike force onto the surface.

The space marines and the demiurg were quickly forced into a defensive position, trying to hold the promethium refineries which the Eldar seemed intent on destroying. Despite a risky gambit to psychically teleport a force of Demiurg into the enemy ranks, the defenders were smashed by a simple raiding force.

It has been surmised by Warmaster Xerxes' advisors that the Eldar seek to blunt the Midas Crusade by denying the Imperium vital supplies. Though it will harm the retake of Minora IV, reinforcements are being sent to the Urbis system to back up the besieged defenders.

Testing The Beast - Voidspar

040613.M41
Orks vs Craftworld Alaitoc.

Voidspar has been mired in a stalemate for months. Raids by orks, eldar and necrons have kept the three armies with little room to outmanoeuvre one another. One side or the other must make test the waters if total victory is to be assured.

It was a raiding force from the Craftworld Alaitoc who made that poor decision. Using their aircraft to strafe the ork lines, keeping the enemy occupied, the ground forces moved from cover to cover before launching into the main assault. The orks had not been idle over the last few months, and the eldar suffered under a withering hail of fire from defensive fortifications.

By the time the eldar had breached the ork defences it was too late, and they had suffered terrible casualties. As the eldar sought to retreat a mighty war cry went up from the ork lines and the greenskins surged forward, cutting down any fleeing eldar. The orks gave chase across the dunes and the might of their WAAAAGH! was on the move once more. All they had needed was a cause to fight, and now they had it.

Battle Fleet Midas - Minora IV

"Whether they fight or not they know they will die anyway, so really is this bravery or simple desperation?" - Captain Thraxas of the Reaver's Hunt, Black Legion flag ship.

310513.M41
Black Legion vs Imperial Navy

For some time now the fleets of Chaos and the Imperium have battled across the skies of the Midas and Minora systems, with the Imperial Navy gaining the upper hand in almost every encounter. With the tide of battle turning on the surface of Minora IV, the fleets of the Black Legion banded together and launched a strike in order to prove their supremacy over the Word Bearers.

When the fleet translated out of the warp, they found almost the entire Imperial fleet in orbit waiting for them. Battle was quickly joined. Waves of fighters spead across the sky while massive star ships attempted to outmanuever their counterparts. Missiles and lasers spread a firey death across the heavens.

The ships of the Black Legion took a heavy pounding but failed to cause much damage to the larger Imperial fleet. The turning point came when the command vessel, a Repulsive class grand cruiser named Reaver's Hunt was struck a midships by a flurry of lance shots. The explosion was vast, destroying two Imperial vessels; the Gothic class cruiser Andromeda, and the Lunar class cruiser Lord Xerxes. With their command ship destroyed, the Black Legion armada turned tail and fled back into the warp.
